The English School sent a terrific team of five students to Ploeşti, Romania this past weekend for the ARGO Open, a Romanian World Schools debate competition. Tonyah Iivonen, Safin Murshed, Michael Ostapenko, Kim-Kristian Seppälä, and Nicholas Shenshin competed in six intense debate rounds against a field of experienced debaters from Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, and Romania. The prepared motions were THBT significant social issues (ex. abortion, gay marriage, religious rights) should not be decided by referendum, THW cap rent prices for residential properties in large urban centres, and THBT tribal courts in indigenous communities should be allowed to try civil and criminal cases within their territory. Our students represented Finland both while debating and while participating in various social cultural exchanges with students from the other countries. The team improved with each round and learned a tremendous amount from the highly-experienced international judges and the student competitors, who come from very well-established programs. The Engs students had some strong individual results and are looking forward to applying the feedback they received in Romania while at their next debate competition.
